SEARCH TIPS
Type a word, phrase, or search expression in one or more of the
search boxes. Letter case is not important.
Example: Typing "City
Council" retrieves that phrase exactly wherever it is used. Typing "city" retrieves
more results and will include all records where the word city is
used in any context.
To do a wildcard search shorten the word with a “*" at
the end of a string of letters. Example: "191*" will find
all dates in the date range 1910, 1911, 1912, . . . etc.
AND: To narrow a search, use "&" between the search
terms. Example: “POW & German” - will find records
in which both words occur.
OR : To broaden a search, use "/" to stand for “or” between
the search terms. Example: To broaden a search for example on a subject
such as armed forces you might try Military / army / militia / armed
forces / war . Or “ 191* / 192 *" will find all dates
in the 1910 ’s and 20’s.
NOT : To search for one term but not another use "!" between
the search terms. Example: " Musical ! theatre “ will
find records using the word musical but will filter out those that
might refer to Musical Theatre.
