Incredible Volunteers
Posted on May 04, 2012 by Sandi
Sometimes I am overwhelmed with the incredibley generous, giving volunteers we have at the Esplanade. I called a volunteer on Thursday to say we needed someone in 30 minutes. She told me she would be on her way immediately and didn't even ask what we needed her for. On Friday I sent a mass e-mail to ask for volunteers for the high volume of events in May and our amazing volunteers have come through once again.
Thank you. Thank you Volunteers.

Katimavik Volunteers in Medicine Hat for the last time.
Posted on Apr 02, 2012 by Sandi
The recent federal budget has revealed a surprise for
Katimavik organizers and disappointment for the non-profits who have
appreciated their hard work. The Katimavik program will no longer exist.
Medicine Hat has been benefitting from Katimavik volunteers for
almost a year but when the current group goes home this June, there will be no
more Katimavik volunteers to take their places. The young volunteers, aged
17-21, volunteer their time in a non-profit organization for two three month terms-eight
hours each day-five days a week. They learn about the Canadian community in
which they live and work, they learn either English or French as a second
language, and they gain valuable experience as they work full time in
organizations throughout Canada.
For more information, see the Katimavik website or
read the article The Vancouver Sun printed in response to
the news.

Outstanding Volunteers
Posted on Feb 29, 2012 by Sandi
We have had some great comments about our volunteers. FOH Stella said that it was a pleasure to work with the volunteers for Stuart MacLean and everyone on the list showed up!
Staff members and patrons were so pleased with all the volunteers for Jann Arden. Backstage help during load-in and out was very much appreciated by the Tech Team. Many of the Ushers had a few extra things to look after for this show and all the comments stated that volunteers were friendly, smiling, capable, helpful and wonderful!
Our Outstanding Volunteer is Sharon Stuber. Sharon handled some "interesting" situations very well during the Sold Out Jann Arden concert. Thank you Sharon!
It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by Sandi
It's snowing as I write and there is a feel of clean fresh whiteness
outside. The trees in the foyer draw visitors who want a nice background for
their group photos and the school concerts are becoming the highlight of theatre
schedule.
The past few weeks have been very busy at the Esplanade. Between all
the recent theatre events and more than 20 school tours of Pack Your Bags in
the Heritage Gallery, our volunteers have spent many hours in the building. There
will be a break in theatre events after the Christmas Extravaganza by the Medicine
Hat School of Performing Arts on the 16th so Ushers can put their
feet up for a while. The school tours continue until the 22nd and
our dedicated Education Volunteers will be ready for a break as well.

Volunteer, Pat, visited with members of the audience during intermission for Dracula the Musical. The Firehall Theatre production of Dracula finished October 30th and had very good reviews for every show. Later this month, Medicine Hat Musical Theatre will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a wonderful presentation of the Broadway hit, The Sound of Music. Photos courtesy of RJF Productions

We have nominated Volunteer Lynda Zimmer for the Prime Minister’s Community Leader Volunteer Award. Lynda began her volunteering career with Big Brothers Big Sisters 16 years ago and has continued to volunteer there as well as in many organizations around the City. She currently volunteers in a variety of positions at the Esplanade as well as the Red Cross, Communities in Bloom, and more. Thank you Lynda for all the volunteering you do in Medicine Hat!
The outsiders
Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by Sandi
I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving weekend!
This week we have the Outsiders on the mainstage. The book and the movie were both big hits so I'm looking forward to Hometown Acting Studio's presentation of this drama. I wonder how they will do the fight scene and the fire...

Volunteering at the Esplanade
Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by Sandi
The Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre has more than 200 volunteers working in a variety of areas throughout the building. These volunteers receive training for the specific duties of the area they volunteer in. From the proper handling of artifacts to the emergency evacuation of a full theatre; the Esplanade counts on volunteers. There are volunteers working in each of the cultural areas, Museum, Archives, Art Gallery, and Theatre, as well as the Gift Shop and Discovery Centre. Volunteers greet visitors and provide tours. They answer questions about the building and the programs. Volunteers help to implement the programs in the Education area and assist with school tours of the galleries. All volunteers receive training and support to enable them to carry out their duties. Volunteer Seminars
Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by Sandi
Volunteers have been busy attending training sessions held at the Esplanade for the past two weekends. On September 18th, Trampas Brown, from the Esplanade Theatre Tech team, took volunteers to backstage locations that most people will never see. The presentation explained backstage lingo, described specific equipment, and provided information on the different volunteer opportunities.
The following weekend Theatre Ushers attended a workshop for new and experienced volunteers to learn about customer service, evacuation procedures, and some new positions and procedures.
The next training session will be held in October and it will provide information for Education and Gallery Volunteers.
Outstanding Volunteer

FOH Staff, Wendy, wants everyone to know that Lorraine G. is a great volunteer. "Lorraine is just so encouraging".
Lorraine volunteers in many areas of the Esplanade and we think she is an important part of our Team.
If you would like to nominate an Esplanade Volunteer for outstanding recognition, let us know by clicking here to e-mail a message.
Sesame Street Comes to Town
Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by Sandi
The Esplanade was alive with the sights, the sounds, and the smells of pure excitement when Sesame Street came to Medicine Hat. Our theatre volunteers were joined by Katimavik volunteers from across Canada who are currently working in several Medicine Hat organizations.
Alberta Ballet Shimmers and Shines
Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by Sandi
Sarah McLachlan fans were treated to an outstanding performance by the Alberta Ballet at the Esplanade in May. The Fumbling Toward Ecstacy ballet tracks through innocence, youth, first love, finding love again and losing it, mature love and, finally, a celebration of life while embracing sisterhood and female empowerment.
