Stepping into shades of sky blue, the exhibition Inside Skies welcomes audiences into a meditative state. Anchored in digital photography – a medium most often used as a method for capturing and preserving memories – this body of work by Elly Heise reflects on the role memory plays in our physical and psychological health, while simultaneously exploring the artist’s Norwegian background and the Norse mythologies of that heritage.
The artwork in Inside Skies, comprised of digital images printed on chiffon, polaroid transfers, cyanotypes and illustrations create portals and perspectival shifts which can be experienced individually or in unison as the viewer walks around the space. Of the exhibition, Heise states “The artwork presents spaces that are both physical and imaginative. Sometimes its hard to navigate the physical world and what’s in your head at the same time. With this show I’m hoping to create a space that allows the viewer to potentially do both. And while memory has been part of the journey, there is a large focus on utilizing photography, heritage, and installations as tools for bettering mental wellness and offering possible self-understanding and presence for viewers.”
