This class will focus on learning traditional yoga poses, breath practices, and relaxation/ meditation techniques inside the Esplanade's heritage and contemporary art galleries. Hatha Yoga is suitable for all persons who wish to experience more freedom in physical movement and would like to release tension from both body and mind.
Throughout the 6 week blocks, participants will the learn the typical structure of a yoga class and the six categories of yoga poses: forward bends, back bends, side bends, twists, balances, and semi-inversions. Each class will focus on postural and body alignment in seated, standing, and lying postures to achieve a full body balanced practice. Options and modifications will be provided throughout. Following each session there will be the opportunity to discuss, meditate, or reflect on the exhibiting artwork. This class will leave you feeling relaxed, centered and recharged for the rest of your day!
Please bring a yoga mat, a yoga strap (this could be a tie, a belt, or anything of the like) and a pillow/cushion for seated and kneeling postures.
About the Instructor
Krista has enjoyed over 25 years in the health and wellness industry and has had experience working with persons of all ages and abilities. As a Fitness Programmer at the Medicine Hat YMCA for 10 years, she honed both my personal training and group fitness leadership skills. The following decade, she added Yoga and Pilates to her repertoire and became co-owner of the Blue Butterfly Yoga and Pilates Centre. These roles allowed her the opportunity to provide fitness services for a variety of clientele from children to seniors. She has also had the opportunity to provide programming for persons with a variety of injuries or health issues. This has entailed modifying and adapting exercises to meet the needs of the individual while also emphasizing the importance of social interaction and emotional well-being.
She currently leads a variety of classes (Yoga, Qigong, Pilates, Strength, Step Aerobics, and Line Dancing) at a number of locations in our community including the Family Leisure Centre, the Strathcona Centre and the Gas City Kiwanis Centre.
