The Esplanade galleries are a place where you and your family can explore, learn and be inspired. A place where together, you can direct your own experience based on what interests you.

Our flexible self-led gallery activities offer you and your family more options to engage with the ideas inside.

Spend a little creative time together exploring a new skill and your imaginations. Who said galleries aren’t a place to get hands on?!

These activities are free of charge and available when our galleries are open. They are geared toward children 5 and up and their adult companions, as well as the young at heart if not in age! Toys and books are present for children of all ages to enjoy.

Current Activities Include:

THE READING LIBRARY

The Reading Library hosts a curated collection of books for young readers to enjoy while spending time in the Discovery Zone. The collection encourages readers to explore art and community and was made possible by the Medicine Hat Library's generous support.

GLASS FACTORY

Come and visit the Altaglass display in the museum! Then head to the Discovery Zone for a hands-on activity where you can explore the unique qualities of glass and design your own vase.  Learn about where colour in glass comes from and see if you can spot the piece of uranium glassware in the museum.

LIGHT TABLE PLAY

Explore, design and play on the Discovery Zone light-table!

Build with shapes, layer colours, create patterns or build asculpture - the possibilities are endless.  

Discovery Zone Activities inspired by The Hand & The Letter exhibition:

SIGNED, SEALED & DELIVERED

Hand-write a message to someone special, it will make their day.  Pen your words using the letter template provided and then turn yourletter into its very own envelope so it's ready to be delivered!  You can even learn to code your letter just in case it contains a top secret message. 

BUILDING LETTERS

Learn all about the anatomy of a letter and create your very own style of hand lettering.  Use the provided guide to take you step-by-step through the process and add your own creative touch to lettering.

BRUSH LETTERING

Practice your brush lettering!  Lettering practice builds muscle memory so warm-up and practice your strokes and flourishes.

DEAR VALENTINE... 

Create a hand-written message for someone special during the monthof February!  Use the Valentines letter template provided, address theenvelope and put it in the mailbox located in The Hand and The Letterexhibition.  Your letter will be safely delivered to your loved one - thepostage is on us.

AGAMOGRAPH: 

Create art that changes right before your eyes!  Learn how to make art that uses optical illusion to change the images seen, all depending on the angle of the viewer.
